There is a question that is highly debated in the world of psychology: whether the thoughts came first or the feelings? or Do Thoughts create Feelings?

The reason this debate exists to date is that the thoughts and feelings are very close to each other and with milliseconds of difference with the thoughts generating the feelings or the feelings are generating the thoughts

 

Science Behind How Thoughts create Feelings

But when we drill down scientifically with the help of equipment and the brain scans it will become clear that the thoughts are the one which will result in feelings. So, scientifically a conclusion is achieved that the thoughts create feelings. 

 

Feelings and Thoughts always Catch each other

The thoughts and feelings will always match each other, it is similar to saying that if you have angry thoughts then that will generate angry feelings and if you will have worried thoughts that will propel worried feelings and when you have happy thoughts you will feel the happy feelings catching up. So, the feelings and thoughts are catching up to each other. They will always match and there will never be a mismatch of the thoughts and feelings.

 

How to Control thoughts and Emotions?

You can see people attend the anger management program, what they tell us the cause of our angry feelings and that is angry thoughts. What does anger management teach us? It teaches us how to control those angry thoughts.

Just observe what thoughts you are having throughout the day, when you consciously sense any anger thought, your work is to stop that thought then and there but how do you do that? It is by distracting with some other activity, you can start listening to some music or start doing math in your head or even read a book, you have to do something to stop that angry thought to take over and propel the angry feeling.

Also, people who cannot control their anger it is seen that their anger feeling is not propelled by one angry thought but it is the result of the stream of angry thoughts that generates the angry feeling to keep going throughout the day. So, you don’t have to just let your mind run in the stream of angry thoughts you have to consciously pick them. 

 

Thoughts create Feelings – choose your thoughts:

You must choose your thoughts to the way you want to feel because the thoughts and the feelings always match. People will always go to the psychologist and say “because of my family or my friend and I am not feeling good or the way I want myself to feel”. You are the person who is creating your internal state and not someone else. You stay on the thoughts that created that feeling, you have to choose your thought to choose your feeling as thoughts create feelings, and this has to do with the conscious effort to choose the right thought again and again as these thoughts will have to stream again and again to impose those feelings.

It is the most common psychological misconception that the outside creates the feeling but it is the inside that creates the feelings.

 

How Thoughts create Feelings

People who are going through depression are the people who cannot stop their mind to stop the depressing thoughts, they are not choosing their thoughts because they are not aware that their depressed state is being created by depressing thoughts. 

When met with a psychologist these people will go on speaking their thoughts about how bad their life is and how others don’t treat them well, and when you interrupt them with a funny joke they will laugh, and again they will get back to the depressing thought again. In this particular moment, you would have observed how a person can go from a horrible state to feeling funny and then again back to his horrible state again. 

They are having the depressing thoughts and all coming one after another thereby creating the depressed feeling and then feeling good from the funny joke and then again the streams of depressing thoughts that follow after that funny thought. Anytime the patient is not thinking about the depressing thoughts he will feel okay.

 

The experiment of Thoughts create Feelings

There is one psychological experiment that you can do if you want to know what is causing you to feel the way you feel. You have to go inside a room with no one in it and sit without doing anything and observe how you feel. Maybe you feel depressed, or angry, or even happy but there’s no one around you but then how come other people make you feel bad, this experiment can conclude that feelings are created by the internal mechanism that is your thoughts and no one is creating the way you feel. Also, check the difference between thoughts and feelings.

 

Feelings are Simple

Feelings are very simple. You may have heard that feelings may arise from the deep-seated subconscious and latent subcontext or the government is brainwashing your mind etc. these are just not true! 

The things that created how you feel is the whole story and drama that is creating those thoughts and the above part is just part of this drama. Feelings are simple, you have a positive thought you have a positive feeling and it is what it is.

The Story You Put on your feelings are complex and not the feelings themselves.

Sometimes people may reject you and you will not have the outcome you wanted and your feelings got hurt and your ego is bruised, and you’re out in just five seconds. Or you can put this in this way that you are having negative feelings about what happened because what you are currently telling yourself and now these feelings end in 3 seconds.

Remove the stories and the feelings become really simple.

 

Same situation but different thoughts 

Let’s take an example of a situation where you are walking on the street and suddenly you notice someone who has studied with you or worked with you and he/she is walking on the other side of the street. You smile and wave your hand towards them, but they keep walking without acknowledging you.

 

Let’s examine the various thoughts creating various feelings.

Scenario 1: 

Your Thought – What’s the matter? Have I done something anytime to upset her?

Your Feeling – Anxious and worried

Scenario 2: 

Your Thought – Why didn’t he respond? Doesn’t he like me? 

Your Feeling – Sad

Scenario 3: 

Your Thought – What’s her problem? What’s wrong with her?

Your Feeling – Angry

Scenario 4: 

Your Thought – I guess he didn’t notice me.

Your Feeling – Mild disappointment.

The point that I want to make is that the situation does not dictate how you feel but the way you feel depends on the thoughts that you have in response to the situation.

 

The ABC of CBT (cognitive behavior therapy)

  • There is the situation or the Activating Event (A), In our example above it is seeing the person and waving hands.
  • Then comes the thoughts or with our ABC model it is termed as Belief(B), these thoughts or belief the connection between the Activating Event (A) and Consequences(C), in our example let’s say your thought was “I guess he didn’t notice me.” and this thought will ultimately link to consequence.
  • Now, at last, we end up with the feeling or the Consequences(C), the ultimate result of the whole process, in our example, you had the thought “I guess he didn’t notice me.” and the feeling you may get will not be too strong but you may be slightly disappointed by the fact that you did not notice.

This is the ABC Model or the Activating Event(A), the Belief(B), and the Consequence(C) Model.

Also, the thoughts that come in our mind as the reaction to the situation is also known as Automatic Thoughts. The thoughts in reaction to the situation are so quick that we are not able to realize that they even occur. Automatic thought determines the emotion we feel, and how strongly we feel it.

 

The cycle of Thought, Feeling and Action

The automatic thought that comes in response to the situation or event also depends on our mood and our feeling. So if you are already feeling anxious there is a higher chance that you may have anxious automatic thoughts, because the thoughts and the moods are propelling one another. 

As there is such a close relationship between the thoughts and the feelings that it is suggested to consciously observe our thoughts to know how your mood is responding to the thoughts. It is very easy to get trapped in the cycle of thoughts and feelings. 

When these cycles get started it is very difficult to slow them down or reverse them. But if you are able to notice these thoughts as they get started you can stop before the cycle begins or slow down before the cycle gains a lot of momentum.

Also we can expand our model of thoughts and feelings and take into account the actions and body sensation, as these all four things interact with each other and influence each other generating a cycle.

Let’s take an example of how panic attacks start.

Situation: You experience a sensation in your chest.

 

Cycle 1: 

Thought: Am I having a heart attack?

Feeling: Anxiety.

Body Sensation: Heart starts to beat faster.

Action: Gasping for breath.

The experience of the sensation may create the thought that if it is a heart attack and this creates a feeling of anxiety and worry to reaction of anxiety the heart starts to beat faster and this causes you to inhale more air and also the second cycle begins where the first cycle creates another automatic thought.

 

Cycle 2: 

Thought: Am I really having a heart attack?

Feeling: Panic.

Body Sensation: Heart beats faster.

Action: Start Hyperventilating.

The Cycle 2 initiates cycle 3 with different automatic thought.

 

Cycle 3: 

Thought: What if I die?

Feeling: More Panic.

Body Sensation: Heart beats faster.

Action: Hyperventilating increases.

And this trap causes you to have a panic attack.

Plain and pleasure are the basic motivation behind every action of man and it also forms the basis of the rational decision in making the policy and actions, what are the pleasure and pain points in the policy created by any organization.

The pain and pleasure principle stated by Freud says that human actions are motivated by one rule to avoid pain and gain pleasure.

People are really SIMPLE, and in today’s culture, we all have made this fact very difficult to understand. Everything is based on the concept of cause and effect. 

The real concept of understanding people is layered around many stories and confusion and the rise of pop psychology has made it even much more complicated. And all these understandings will be made clear when you will read this complete article.

What really makes it complicated to understand people is the Layers of BS or Belief System.

The first major psychological concept that comes in understanding people is 

People move toward pleasure and Away From Pain

This is literally the whole sum of the psychology of why people do things they do. 

Our mind is literally working 24/7 to weigh out the pain and pleasure by every effort you make and it is really working to get the cause benefitting analysis and making efforts to maximize the pleasure and minimize the pain.

This is the simple thing for every action of man…

The one concept that comes from the king of clinical psychology is :

If one has the ability to control the pleasure and pain of a person then one can get anything done from the person.

And Guess What…he has NEVER BE PROVEN WRONG.

 

Understanding Pain and Pleasure

We can understand pain and pleasure in very broad terms but we usually narrow down it to physical pain and physical pleasure. Any trouble, disturbance, irritation, and even uneasiness will be a matter of pain principle, and when you enjoy spending time with your friends or if people think well of you can all come under the pleasure principle.

There is a wide range of pain and pleasure like someone who gets an A in a subject derives pleasure from it and someone who gets C from which he was likely to get F derived the same pleasure as the previous person shows that these thresholds can vary.

There is a good exercise that you can perform: Pick a piece of paper go down in quiet place and analyze what are the things that are a pleasure for me and for are the things that are a pain for me. Maybe something that you wrote down will fall in the category of pleasure but when you start to analyze it more and think more there may come a time when you will say “Oh! Actually I don’t like this!”. You may like hanging out with some people but it last few days you might have realized that they are a pain to hang out with. And same will go with vice versa that you put something in the pain column and then you realize wait it was not that painful actually, we all go through and school and college and when we enter the line of job and employee scenario, that you miss reading some text from the book and actually they weren’t that bad when you don’t pursue any higher educations.  

 

Pain and pleasure principle as Perceiving

Here’s the concept that confused the king of clinical psychology, There exists a concept of PERCEIVED PAIN and PERCEIVED PLEASURE.

There is an example for you:

Sometimes, when you see people in the gym lifting those heavy dumbbells and the strain that you one their faces and the sweat just wants to escape their forehead. On observing them you will definitely say that I cannot so much pain as these guys are taking. Then how in the world they are taking it?

Good Question…

They have perceived their pain with pleasure, they have used their mental alchemy to perceive the real pain as the perceived pleasure. They will go pumping, and pumping… the weights and say I am getting buffed and ladies will love me. Now here they are perceiving their pain as a pleasure to lift the heavyweights, and this is a good use of it.

The above one is an example of turning real pain into perceived pleasure.

 

Example of perceived pain and perceived pleasure

The two things people fear the most in the world is –

  1. Fear of dying 
  2. Public speaking

And there are some circumstances that the fear of public speaking can take on the first position. 

Sometimes people and you can now be afraid of public speaking but some people are making a good chunk of money out of it and this is their source of income and in many cases, these individuals were afraid to speak in public.

People can have PERCEIVED PAIN such as the public are gonna judge me or I am gonna forget my lines to speak up there because of nervousness or people gonna laugh the way I speak. And because of this people are attaching massive perceived pain with it.

Now when you get a good practice of speaking in the public and your PERCEIVED PAIN vanishes, there is no nervousness in speaking your mind. Then comes the part of PERCEIVED PLEASURE, where you want to deliver VALUE to the people and you know when you go up there people want that great value this is what you see as PERCEIVED PLEASURE. You want to affect people’s lives in a positive way and this thinking is creating a PERCEIVED PLEASURE state.

Now the above example demonstrates how one can transform the perceived pain into perceived pleasure.

 

Child and pain and pleasure principle

Now there’s a classical example in psychology. Let’s assume that you are a baby and you are on a sofa and trying to move and you took a right turn, as a result, you receive massive pain from falling down the sofa. When you feel down you may start seeing up the couch and here you as a baby you can equal pain with couches, at this moment is where the relationship comes into existence. When your mother puts two couches you may start to cry as in your mind you have associated the couches with pain.

In the same way, we can have many perceivable pleasure and pain entities that we carry in our lives. This example is a clear understanding that people can move away from pain and toward pleasure holds true for people who can move away from perceived pain and towards perceived pleasure.

 

Get your Reality checks

Oftentimes we ACT on the things whether it may be perception or misperception. The things you may act on may not be true or real but on perceived reality. We can act on the correct and the incorrect information the same.

Once a famous PR said that if you repeat a lie long enough it will eventually be perceived as the truth. To this day that saying holds true. You can find the rigorous practice of the above statement in marketing. The things that are told many times will eventually become the truth if not disputed or questioned or proven wrong. In marketing, it is known that what I present to you will be seen as true not the real truth but the perceived truth.

They know that illusion is reality.

 

Fact-based on pain and pleasure principle

fact 1: It is said in psychology that people can do 2.5 times more to avoid the Pain than to Gain Pleasure. 

It’s just simply saying that you like to move away from pain 2.5 times more than you will move towards to gain pleasure. For example, there might be an equal worth to say 1000$ but you will do two times more effort to keep that thousand bucks in their pocket safe from being stolen than making two times less effort to gain a thousand bucks.

You can use this fact in motivating others that avoidance of pain can motivate people more than pleasure.

Fact Two: There is nothing such as the UNSELFISH act.

You will not take the slightest action unless the act is maximizing the pleasure and minimizing the pain. So you may ask the question of what people like social workers.

On the basis of the pain and pleasure model, it can be said that people are perceiving the pain of the other people who are actually in real pain and relieving them of their suffering is actually bringing the pleasure for the social worker.

There is nothing sort of unselfish act people will always do things that will bring them pleasure and reduce pain, had any one of these social workers been told to fix nuts into the screw and their actions will save millions of lives than they wouldn’t have done it they will not have the motivation to go that far.

The same way people can have arguments like I may give my muffin to my friend and that’s an unselfish act and the friend may ask you did you not feel good? The answer will be that you felt good. That’s another thing demonstrating the pain and pleasure theory.

Many times parents say that I give everything to my child and they do not understand and listen to me and I do not get anything in return.

Here you may assume the parents are performing an unselfish act but actually, they are receiving a lot of pleasure by just being a giver, and there is a massive pleasure when people give things to others without expecting anything in return, and then everyone can sense the feeling of doing good things.

An honest person will derive great pleasure from being honest. They will perceive lying as a bad thing to do and this will bring them very dissatisfaction but when they speak truly they get the surge of endorphins that happy feeling that keeps the honest man happy.

The good person and the bad person are doing their acts based on the same pain and pleasure model and this all governs everyone, both of them are doing things to avoid pain and gain pleasure. Each of them is using the same system to reach the same point but with different systems.

 

Pain and Pleasure and Utilitarianism

Pain and pleasure principle

Also, there is the concept of positive utility and negative utility that is joined with the pleasure and pain principle that the positive utility tends to promote and influence the pleasure and the negative utility tends to produce or promote pain.

So what is utility? With the utility, we are talking about the usefulness of the object. Let’s take an example of the coffee, many of us are in habit to take many coffee cups throughout the day, so what utility is brought by drinking coffee let’s say you will feel more alert, or to avoid headaches, or you like the taste of the coffee.

Now every utility has pleasure and pain tied to it and is promoting it, like avoiding headaches is like avoiding pain and feeling alert, and doing your task well with focus is a pleasure. The type of utility is decided by the type of propensity it produces whether it is pleasure or pain.

There are times when in short terms the action may lead to negative utility but in the long term, they will produce positive utility.

Let’s take the example of going to a doctor visit, it may be painful to take injections from the doctor and sitting in line for an hour to get to the doctor, so in short term, it is creating more negative utility or producing more pain but in longer-term you will get benefitted by the medicine and will eventually get healthier and that’s a positive utility in the longer term.

Also, there may be vice versa that in shorter-term actions result in positive utility than in longer-term it may result in negative utility.  Let’s take an example of eating, you go to a cafeteria and you are really hungry and you find your favorite dish, what you do? You fill your plate and sit and eat till your stomach fills up.  The hunger satisfaction and your favorite dish may create a sense of pleasure but when your stomach gets full you may feel nauseous and sleepy also it will not feel good with walking full stomach. So in the longer-term, it is creating more negative utility then positive utility in the short term and this fact can help to take a more rational decision.

Same goes the concept with Utilitarianism which goes with the saying that even it does not make you feel good but you create pleasure for someone else that is a good thing or even if you do not feel bad afterward and there are no negative repercussions for you but you create pain for somebody else that is a bad thing.

I want to give you three awesome ways to meet cool people after graduating and this is gonna be really useful if you’ve just graduated or you may have graduated a long time ago but you’re moving to a new city and you have to start over or quite frankly, anywhere in between; because these are the principles for making friends in any situation. So first one is this — be the hub. Now, what I mean by this is if you think of a bicycle wheel, it’s got a bunch of spokes coming into a central hub. And the question is — in your friend group, are you more like the hub — the person who is organizing events saying, “Let’s go to my house,” or “guys, do you wanted me to this restaurant at 7:00?” or “go to this movie on Wednesday night,” — or are you the person who is the spoke? — sitting at home waiting for the text to come in which sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn’t. That is the downside of being a spoke. Yes, you don’t have to take charge of organizing events but you’re only invited some of the time and even worse, when one of the other spokes has a party or a cool event and they can’t invite everybody, who is the person that they invite? It’s inevitably the person that invited them; it’s that hub. And this is why people who tend to organize events or just have dinners where they invite a bunch of people over tend to make friends exponentially faster than the people who are just invited. So if you want to kickstart your friend group, this is a really easy thing to do Think of something this week that you can invite your immediate circle of friends to or even your family and also encourage them to bring anyone that they might like — it could be a dinner, could be movie, or it could be game night. The second thing — I’ll admit is the one that I do because I’m not an organizer; I hate planning things and I’ve really almost never do it so I have to rely on this one — and it’s to be the beacon.

And what I mean by this is to stand out in a way that makes you stand out in people’s minds as a little bit different but then they associate you with other people like you concretely. When I first left my job along with Ben, we were dealing with a lot of conversations from our friends trying to talk us out of quitting our jobs becoming entrepreneurs and moving to Brazil with no plan. When that inevitably failed and we said, “No, we’re going,” they said, “Alright, at least talk to my buddy who quit his job last year and is an entrepreneur” or “alright, you should talk to this guy who moved to Brazil last year; he can help you sort of get your bearings.” And that’s how we met our best friend in Brazil and I’ve met countless entrepreneurs from other people who maybe didn’t necessarily approve of what we were doing but because we were so different in their mind, they kind of set up like friend dates where they put us together and that had never happened to me in my life until I started to stand out. Now, you might not be an entrepreneur and you may be wondering how do I do this. If that’s the case, there’s actually a very easy way. And it’s to take a hobby of yours — preferably something you really like or that is very different — and put it early in conversation and I’ve seen Ben do this a ton. People say, “What do you do?” when you can of course say your job but then you can say, “Also, on the weekends, I like surfing. Now, some people won’t respond to that but some people very enthusiastically will go, “Oh, my god, man. Me too. I’ve been looking for a surf partner. Do you want to go sometime?” They go surfing; if they’re friendly, they hang out outside of that. Or they’ll say, “I’m not into it but my buddy is. You guys should meet,” and the same thing happens. Quite frankly, this is how I have met 95% of the people in my life; they have come into it through Charisma on Command since I graduated college and I am forever thankful of this — those of you who have emailed me, my friends and my roommates, guys who came to the first ever class that I held, a guy one of my roommates was a guy who came to the first ever class of which is our online course. Money Making

If you are in a job your money making capacity is held by the system. If you landed a lower position initially in you workplace it will take time to grow, the salary will increase in a linear fashion like 20k per month in first year and 30k per month in second year.

Maybe if you land on a good position in the company then you become content with the initial salary of 60k to 80k per month but you will at the end face the same issue of the growth rate of increment by only 10% – 20% in the next upcoming year.

The business goes by exponential rule, you may not even make single penny in first year. And then you may be making more than 100k every month in the second year.

Generally when people make business in online world, they see a stagnation period of one to two years with absolutely no money but once the starts to come in the third or fourth year than it will grow like exponentially from 10k every month to 40k other month to 100k next month and 200k the fourth.

You are the only person who is responsible for you payouts and promotions there is no one holding you promotions. The only thing required for your success is knowledge and hard work.

Initial income

The business has kept the salary thing very simple, either there is nothing or there is everything. There is no real time constraint of making a business model profitable.

If you inherit the business from the family and the business model in making money than your earnings are guaranteed from the next day. But when it comes to starting up the things from scratch and have no prior experience it will take maybe an year or two before you receive your first income comes and to make the business model profitable it may take an year more.

You can expect up to two or three years of earning the real profits and not just making money.

Whereas in a job you will have that initial income as soon as the month comes to an end. There is security to that . You will be paid as you deserved in the jobs from starting out. This also gives motivation for something good in life.

Here I want to suggest if you want to start the business in some field do get some experience by working jobs initially it will help you believe that really the money is their at the end while you are ot paid as you start in business.

Security in Job Vs Business

Security is one of the greatest motivator for people, where lies the security their lies the safety.

There are two types of job that people will find themselves to be working under and that is one the public or the government jobs and the private or the corporate world job.

Government jobs are relatively more secured than the private jobs. The government jobs are only effected when there are changes to the policies by our lawmakers. But the private jobs are effected by the how well they are doing in market. If the business goes down the corporate have to remove people from their jobs.

The business is not secured that’s the beauty of it. Your income may be 1 lakh inr per month today but if the demand get disrupted than you will have nothing in hands. It’s a little volatile but at the same time the more rewarding.

Also if you are in market of evergreen demand like providing essential of the people then you have to build a system that can take care of business when you are not around the business becomes secured as well as more freedom you will get.

The Working Hour

The government or private have fixed hour of working you will have to work 9 to 5 and there is no escape from the fixed timing of the jobs.

There is no fixed timing in business you can work on your will and the hour you feel the most productive whether it can be 9 to 5 of the day or the night the timing becomes highly flexible.

The job has fixed working time whereas the business will have flexible working time.

If you want fixed timings in you work and security than government job becomes the right option for you but if you want freedom than your lie in business.

Retirement And Pension Plan

There is a set age of 60 to 65 years in jobs and after that you will have to retire and from then you will start getting your money from the pension plans.

Whereas in business you will have the opportunity to retire early and don’t have to wait for years to become free and enjoying your life. When you have built your source of income stream and the business has start to generate income without your requirement then you can rest for the life as these sources gives of income passively.

Social Status

This point totally goes into the favour of the job, because people at a good position in jobs and especially in the government jobs are treated with much respect.

The job worker becomes example that the parent gives to their children and will also aspire them to follow the same. Jobs are treated as a much of respect from friends and family and also other people like to associate with you.

In a Business, people will have a negative eye as you start out until you will start earning a respectable income. Also even when you start earning a handsome amount then also people will not treat you with as respect as they will give to a job earner.

If you want respect than definitely go for the job but if you want to work for your cause regardless of how people will perceive than business.

Budget or No Budget

In a job as the salary is fixed so is the budget within which you have to survive. Job earner have the budget within which they have to feed the family and it remains mostly same for the rest of the life.

But for business owner there is No Budget when the profits are increased the budget are increased and if the business becomes successful there is also a chance that your budget will go out of the window and you will spend according to your desire and not just to survive.
